August 25 – Golden Trophy Cruise/Race

Hedonist Corner –

This looks to be another ‘Coming event!’ We await material from Gord and/or Linda. Our own travels to date this season have not uncovered any interesting material sad to say.

Confederation Basin – Kingston
Monty Boultbee, adventurer former Rear Commodore and the Treasurer who saved my bacon, and my house, reports that the day docks and Confederation Basin are no longer free. The charge is $3.00 for the first two hours, and $1.00 for each subsequent hour to a maximum of $8.00
By comparison, Prinyers Cove charges $25.00 per day for day docking and $1.00 per foot otherwise. Parking is $3.00 per day, and other charges. are listed. Hydro use is #2.00 per day.

From The Sailing School Director
Well half way through the sailing school season and the classes our going well. We have had 18 students through the White sail Program so far and 8 students in the Bronze. All seem to have fun and have enjoyed the time on the water. We will hold our first Awards dinner, Thursday July 26, 2007 and as club hall is rented it will be held in sailing school area.
The Carolina Skiff motor has been repaired and is now operational for the school,  only. In an effort to avoid vandalism we will lock up all keys and gas tanks every night. I would ask Club members to keep an eye on the sailing school property and let me know if they see anything out of the ordinary.
Thanks and great sailing.
Larry, Sailing School Director.

From the House Chair and Vice Commodore
A local radio station is using the catch phrase “96 days of summer”. It doesn’t sound right to me; somehow makes it seem shorter. Imagine my dismay then when I find that it is really only 94 days on my calendar (31 days in each of July and August plus 10 in June and 22 in September). However, the good news for us lucky PEYC members is that there are 160 days in our summer, launch to haul-out.  Now that’s more like it!
So here we are at roughly the mid point in our busy season having already enjoyed many great activities at the club and with a lot yet to look forward to.
The Friday evening Happy Hours continue to attract many members and visitors too and the feedback is all very positive. Last week we were pleased to welcome a new volunteer to help set-up the snacks for those evenings, Cathy Coltis. Thank you Cathy.
Our July 20th Friday Dinner saw 27 of us enjoy another excellent example of Sheila’s catering skill; barbequed chicken was served and garnered much appreciation. Since there will be the Pig Roast and dance on Saturday August 18th in conjunction with the Viking Challenge, no separate Friday Dinner is planned for the month. So all our Friday night dinner patrons are cordially invited to join us on August 18th. The price is $15 p.p. and the tickets usually sell quickly
Meantime let’s get out and enjoy the remaining 73 days of our summer.

Another ‘New’ Boat in the Club!
Dave Knickerson’s interesting aluminum house cruiser has joined the fleet, and is moored on the Town Docks Congratulations to Dave and welcome home. The boat, one of those originally designed for Alcan and later built by Alwest, a spin-off company from the aluminum  giant is a deep-V hulled vessel that handles rough water well and has a good turn of speed.  One wonders if it may also sail better than a certain class of sailboat, once marketed by the Bayliner Corporation. The Buccaneer does earn an ‘A’ for Accommodation, though.

Something to Do
If you have not yet visited the resurrected Old Post Office on Main Street, Picton, please drop by and take a look at the displays. The building was officially opened on July 21 by Mayor Leo Finnegan and Yacht Designer, Pilot and Engineer, George Cuthbertson. The ground floor is now open daily.
