Commodore’s Corner

Commodore Dave Dodd sent his greeting for the season to all members in an email message that was posted on the Club bulletin board as well as being sent out to all members by Rob Giberson.

From The House!

A record number of members and guests sat down to a beautifully prepared and presented turkey meal for our Christmas Dinner December 7th. The consensus was that it was even better than the Commodores Ball. Several commented on the great decorations for the hall and many thanks go to the ladies who spent many hours on that task and also setting tables.

In addition, many thanks go to all those who contributed an hors d'oeuvre dish to the pot luck Happy Hour on the 21st. It turned into quite a 'pre-Christmas Party and certainly bears repeating next year.

Many thanks to all our stalwart members who braved the elements New Year’s Day to attend the Annual Levee. If we lacked in numbers, we certainly didn't lack in enthusiasm. A great way to kick-off the New Year.

And the enthusiasm extended to assistance with the clearing and dishwashing too. Many, many thanks to those volunteers  Vice Commodore Rob Giberson and Colleen were there to welcome the happy members and guests.

Happy Hour continues on Fridays, except in the case of a scheduled Club dinner.

A casual mixed darts group meets Thursdays at 7:30 PM at the club. All skill levels, everyone is welcome!

Last year the January calendar included a wonderful Celtic Night in celebration of Robbie Burns and Scotch Whisky – single malt, of course. That event will be repeated this year. It will likely be close to Robbie Burns’ Day, on January 18  More details will be sent shortly, from Johnnie Coull, Chief Celt.

Hedonists’ Corner

The Hedonists are still hiding in their corner…(with their heads!)

We have been promised submissions, but pretty soon none of them have arrived. At present, with boats on the hard, the Club bar makes a suitable gathering place for those seeking pleasure and relaxation. There is no charge for dockage, and the cost of refreshments is modest.

Cruising News!

This clip from U-tube, was stolen from the newsletter of QCYC.  It proves there are worse sailors around than your editor!

MOORINGS

You may wonder what’s up with moorings in December, well nothing as a matter of fact (except for their markers!). There are, however,

a few things to report on the Harbour.  Ice appeared much earlier this year, actually a month and a half earlier. This brought the fishing to a halt. By the first of December there were five inches of ice in front of the club. Not too many years ago we were still sailing!. The ice thickness is most important because “The PEYC Curling on the Bay” event will be held on Saturday, January 26th (one week after the Robbie Burns Celebration). There are now several names for this event, including the “Chilli Bowl” and “The Toilet Bowl”.  The exact nature of the game will depend upon the ice conditions; however, toilet seats will again be featured. There will be a selection of chillis for sampling so set Saturday the 26th aside for this exciting event. Contact Bobby Peat or myself for details.

Odds and Ends

 PEYC Cookbook!

Be sure to get your favourites in to Cathie Coultis for inclusion in this important volume of culinary delights, both for home use and aboard cruising, hedonistic yachts! Recopies can be given or sent to her directly, or left at the Club for her.

The Newly Elected Board Takes Over!

The Club Board of Directors held its inaugural meeting, and as you may have seen from the masthead of this edition of the Bay Beaver Bugle, the status qui has been retained, except for the Flag Officers.  Dave Dodd remains as Commodore, while Rob Giberson has been appointed as Vice Commodore, with Larry Tilling  taking on the rank of Rear Commodore.

Henry Pasila  has stepped down from the role of Immediate Past Commodore. This was Henry’s wish, and in accordance with the Club by-laws which only state that the retiring commodore be an ex-officio member of the board for the year following retirement.
