APRIL 2007

HERE WE ARE AGAIN!

WELCOME ABOARD!

Coming Events!
April 14 – Riverboat Fantasea
April 21 -  Dock Launch
April 28 -  Dock Assembly

Riverboat Fantasea is the major, annual fund raising event in aid of the Sailing School,  and a wonderful time of good food, good games and great conviviality. This is a Club (and County) traditional event that should never be missed!

Sorry about the error in dates that appeared in out last issue, but the timing was changed to avoid conflict with Dock Launch. A wise move!

Looking farther ahead…
Cathy Crowe has asked that we remind you that  there will be a Martini Tea for the Ladies on May 26, during the Niddle and Pre-Niddle sailing events for men. Please contact Cathy for details.

Hold onto October 27, a Saturday, when there will be a Hallowe’en party at the Club… This is a date to remember!

MESSAGE FROM THE DOCK MASTER!

A WORD FROM THE DOCKS
Although the Beaver is still standing and we still have a few inches of ice in the harbour, we have scheduled a work party for April 14th to accomplish some needed work before we launch docks the week following. We have some repair work to do to sections of B dock including welding to pull it back into shape. We need to finish the zebra mussel removal from a few dock sections.Flotation barrels need the bungs removed from those that show leaking, empty them and replace and reseal.
Weather permitting, I would like a group of volunteers to assemble for 9:00 A.M. on the 14th and if you have scrapers, please bring them.  We should also be able to assess if any problems have occurred with C Dock, which was left in this winter as an experiment.
I look forward to seeing you on the 14th

Tonny den Boer – Dock Master

COMMODORE’S CORNER

Commodore Dave tells us that for this month he is at a loss for words, but promises to break his silence for the May edition of the Bugle.

HEAD IN THE CORNER

Since the waters around Glen Island, Ram Island, Hallowell Cove and similar locations remains in a solid state, there are no interesting sightings to report at this time. Gord Timmeron may be considering some revelations from the past, but we do reserve editorial privileges…

A REPORT FROM THE MOORING DIRECTOR

The mooring tires are reappearing in the harbour as the ice melts and the club awaits the Beaver's annual plunge. It is now past last years date of March 27.  Hopefully the tires will remain in place as the ice disappears. If the mooring does get moved it probably does not have enough weight, and if it breaks free the anchor chain was probably rusted. So it's a test. An annual visual check of the mooring and chain is also necessary if you are going to hang your pride and joy on the end of it. Mooring owners are liable for any ensuing damage.
Applications for the moorings are in the mail and payment is due the middle of the month. If you are interested in renting a mooring let me know and I will put you in touch with an owner who is willing to rent. On another note will the person who "borrowed" the pail of 3/8 inch gold anchor chain from the back of the club please return same.

Gerry den Hartog - Mooring Director

House Report

March is not an active “house” month. Our Friday night Happy Hour is drawing increasing numbers of members; probably the spring season rather than those succulent M & M morsels.  Darts night continues to draw a few stalwarts out on Thursdays, snow (and wives) permitting. Meanwhile, our snowbirds were still sunning/wining on distant sultry shores.
Little wonder then that March 10 saw 40 plus of us gather at the club for a fabulous slide show (forgive me, Power Point Presentation) of Jim Hartford and Lynn Stein’s enviable trip down to Grenada in their 38 ft C & C. Their account was at once laid-back, but stimulating, informative and entertaining. Of particular interest was the large display of charts and special items used or brought back from the trip. The log books were fascinating, giving the feeling of “being there”. One day . . . .  in my dreams . . .

Thanks so much Jim and Lynn and a great big thanks also to those who brought the super snacks to go with the beer, or rum or . . .Now it’s time to get those boats prepped.

See you for dock launch soon.
Barrie Atkinson, Vice Commodore and House Director

Editorial Musings

In our last issue, there may have been some confusion between the Commodore’s report and an article about the Archives and Collections Society, new owners of the old Post Office building on Mains Street.  That was not a message from Commodore Dave, but from yours truly who happens to be a director of the A and C Society. Mea culpa, Dave.

At this point, I’d like to recommend membership in the Archives and Collections Society to PEYC members. Community ownership will only become a reality if nautically inclined people like us become involved. Details on request!

See you at the Club!
