Commodores Corner – Giving Thanks!

The Riverboat Fantasy fundraising for the Sailing School was a great success – with thanks to Brenda and the organizing committee and the dozens of folks that helped before during and after the event.  And thanks to the members and guests for their generous donations – they go a long way to our purchase of the new Sailing School tender.
We had wonderful weather for launching and assembling the docks.  Again, thanks to the volunteers who scraped away the mussels, tightened the bungs and connected and anchored the docks.  Great work! During the winter, C Dock looked pretty bad, tilted up in the ice, but it righted as the ice melted and seems to have survived the winter unscathed.  One observant member remarked that it was funny that we were busy scraping the mussels off the docks on shore, while the docks that were left in during the winter were completely free of mussels!  So there appears to be another benefit of leaving the docks in over winter.Boat Launch is May 5th – a reminder to owners of boats on trailers to let Tony den Boer know their plans for launch day.
As you visit the Club, you’ll notice that the front landscaping has been completely renewed, thanks to Sandy & Bobby Peat and a host of volunteers.  Thanks, it looks great!
John Lyons has, for almost two decades, worked around the Club doing things that needed doing – tidying and organizing the grounds, cleaning up the garbage area (left messy by us!), arranging for the trophies to be cleaned and a host of other important jobs that are not pleasant but necessary.  Many thanks, John!  Unfortunately, John will be unable to help this summer due to an injury, so we will need volunteers to do these things – so if you see something needed doing – please do it.  If unsure, ask Dennis Payne or Gary Eames.
I’ve been asked to remind members that the garbage bins are for garbage from the boaters – not household garbage.  Also, please do not leave oil or antifreeze there - it will not be picked up!!
There were some hijinks around the Club last week focusing on the relocation of the toilet bowl from the Curling Bonspiel. (I have pictures) As one member says “Who has as much fun as us?”  A new member remarked that they had been members of many Clubs, but had never seen one that had such an active, fun social life.  Great – keep up the good work!!

Apologies from Last Issue

In the April issue, we made the error of spelling Cathy Crow’s name incorrectly by adding an ‘e’ which should not have been there. Mea culpa. Also Gord Timperon’s name was misspelled as well. Mea maxima culpa. Sadly perfection eludes us, but we do try, and will try harder.

Happy Hour

The popular Friday event, begun last year continues with the present House Director and Vice Commodore Barrie Atkinson, and remains a pleasant part of our Club social life. Dropping by the Club for the cocktail hour (or two) has become an established tradition, and is a perfect way to begin the weekend.

 At the Old Post Office

Drywalling and general cleanup has been almost completed, and the first floor of the former Customs House and Post Office will soon be open to the public. The annual exhibition of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists will be open there, following the annual dinner of the A and C Society and the CSMA at the Waring House, Saturday, May 5, when the works will also be on display..
Memberships are available in the A and C Society, and support of this nature will ensure that the ownership and control is in the hands of the community, especially those with an interest in things nautical.

 Mariners’ Park Museum

Diane Wenn, who has been Curator of the Wellington Museum for several years has recently been named Curator of the South Bay museum, where her enthusiasm will be an asset.

 Verities from the Vice…

Boat launch next weekend. Great! Another season gets underway. That probably means that you’ve been going through all that gear stashed away in basements/attics/lockers and deciding on some new stuff or turfing out some old. We have the perfect way to cover both needs:

The Boaters Bargain Basement
or
The Mariners Merchandise Mart

After a hiatus of a year or two we are scheduling another flea market at the club

Date: Saturday May 26

Time: 0900

If you are selling, bring all your unused or surplus gear down to the club. We will assign you a table. You sell whatever you can and donate 10% to the club.

And if you are in the market or the mood to buy, come on down and see what neat stuff is available.

In either case it is a great way to support the club, turn unused things into cash and/or to find a needed bargain item.

Make a note of that date and check with me (Barrie, 471 1564 or jeanne.barrie@sympatico.ca)

or Dennis at the bar to reserve space.
