PRINCE EDWARD YACHT
CLUB
6th Annual Viking 28
Challenge Series
August 21 & 22nd 2004

Once again the Vikings raided the the beautiful
Picton Bay waters to do battle over the conquest of the supreme
"Viking Sailor". The Prince Edward Yacht Club has hosted all
six series which has grown over the past years . More boats were
expected form the Toronto area but due to the unpredicted canal
closing scheduling boat and crew deliveries proved a greater
challenge than racing series. Good winds blessed the fleet on both
days of racing much to the delight of the race committee and the
racers. The race organizers Don Hudson. Mark Leavitt and Harvey
Gottfried would like to thank all the volunteers who made this event
even more enjoyable this year with the addition of a pig roast and a
dance on the Saturday night.

The distance race on Saturday started with light to
variable winds which grew from 5 to 15 knots out of the NW in
the afternoon. It was an interesting start with half the fleet
starting on a port tack resulting in some fouls at the start line.
The course took the racers from Hallowell cove up
the Hayward Long
Reach back to Glenora Ferry up Adolphus Reach to Kieth Shoals and
returning to Glenora over to the Mid Channel mark and back to
Glenora finishing back at Hallowell cove. Although the
race changed lead after the first mark Feather took control and lead
the fleet to the finish.
As an added attraction to the Viking Challenge a pig roast was
organized by Chera Kuipers, Johnny "Valley" Coull provided dinner
tunes and Bev Gorsline. Many thanks to Russ Cole and his son Warren
who cooked the sacrificial porker which was consumed by the over 150
people who attended the meal. Thanks to all the volunteers who not
provided various dishes for the meal but volunteered their time to
prepare and serve a most sumptuous feast fit for the most
persnickety Viking.

Sunday saw three course races (winward / leward )
the wind had switched to the SW at 10 - 15 kts. It seemed that the
races were a little more aggressive at the start line in this series
with some over early calls. The competition was tight with some good
close spinnaker runs with a six minute spread at the finish line for all three course races.
