10th Annual
Waupoos Wabbitt Wace
Saturday, July the
9th sailors gathered around the Prince Edward Yacht Club preparing
for the Waupoos Wabbitt Wace. Don Hudson, race organizer for the
event held the skippers meeting at 0930h and the race satarted at
1020h thanks to Jack Strachan aboard Jada.
The wind goddess was stingy for the start and boats drifted over the
start line fro what we anticipated to be a long hot, exhausting day.
Two hours later Genevieve, Fox and the Run and Regardless passed the
ferry with the rest of the fleet struggling to reach the cement
plant. The wind shifted to the North West as predicted and the wind
picked up and the boats started to move. As we continued down the
reach Highball made her move and closed the distance on the front
runners. The wind continued to increase in speed and all the
fleet was moving along well. We went through the gap and out into
the lake waters. The northwester continued to build and it was a
close reach into Waupoos Island. Genevieve stated to pull ahead
after being pestered by the Viking and the Niagara all the way down
the reach. Meanwhile the shark continued to bite into the lead
boats.
Genevieve crossed the finish line at 17:11:13 followed by Fox and
the Run and Regardless. The rest of the fleet finished within the
next hour and a half. Uncle Roy Burger King (Freya III) gave his
daughter and friend an extended cruise of Prince Edward Bay and
finally arrived in time for the end of the barbeque.

Don Hudson introduced Linda Kennedy of Waupoos Marina. Linda thanked
her staff for the great BBQ, all the racers for their continued
support for the
race
and a special thanks to all who contributed to the new Waupoos
Wabbitt Wace Trophy. Many thanks go Linda and her staff for
surviving the tragic fire and keeping the marina operational.
Many thanks go the
sponsors of the Wabbitt Wace: Waupoos Estates and Winery: County
Cider Company: Huff Estates Winery; Long Dog Vineyard and Winery and
Black Prince Winery.

Now to the awards
ceremony. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, everyone who
participated received a bottle a wine or cider.
