Waupoos Wabbitt Wace 2006
The 11th Annual Waupoos Wabbitt Wace got under way with thirteen participating boats. Wyndaria, from Trenton and our own Arethusa an Hopper where first time entries. Thanks to Lobster, George and Doreen Hunt for providing the committee boat and the start got underway at 1010h. The wind was very light and boats drifted towards the ferry the first if which took about two and one-half hours to reach. Once past the ferry the wind started to fill and the race was on. Unfortunately, for those with low ratings the clock had been ticking and time was a precious commodity for the remainder of the race. Fool's Overture set the pace in the reach and lead the way out into the lake. Genevieve enjoyed the strengthening winds and eventually gained the lead. The Fool continued to mingle with the big boys and I am sure kept us asking ourselves "Who are those guys"? Meanwhile the rest of the fleet took advantage of the stronger winds in the lake and worked their way towards Waupoos Island. Two boats gave up the quest and returned to port. Nine boats completed the course the last of which crossed the finish line at 2030h. Congratulations goes out to all who participated. Special mention to Freya III who actually made it to port before sunset and without incident, well one little one that we won't talk about.
As usual the Waupoos marina crew supplied a fabulous barbeque with delicious deserts. It's worth the trip around to just enjoy the barbeque. Meanwhile the results are being tallied and the presentation awards are about to begin. Many thanks to Don Hudson fro organizing the race, arranging for prizes and making the presentations. Linda Kennedy, Waupoos Marina, welcomed and thanked all who participated. You the boaters are the ones responsible for the continued success of the event and we are now celebrating eleven years said Linda. It has been a great partnership, but recognition must be given to Linda and her staff who have survived personal tragedy and the devastating fire that threatened their very existence. Today the marina is providing a safe harbor for the weary traveler in one the most scenic spots in the County. A nice complimentary coffee and muffin awaits the early riser or if you prefer a full breakfast is served. Please drop around and enjoy their full service marina and friendly atmosphere.
